Pow Wow Dances

Here are some of the dances you can expect to see at our Pow Wow.

Grand Entry

1A

The Grand Entry is the first thing you will see before any dancing begins and is a parade of sorts. All of the dancers enter the arena, preceded by the Eagle Staff and the “colors”, or flags. The staff and flags are marched around the circle and posted in front of the drum.

The Veterans’ Dance

 1A

The Veterans’ Dance is a dance to honor our veterans, who have sacrificed so much to assure that we maintain our freedom. The veterans enter the arena accompanied by the Eagle Staff and flags and make a circuit around the arena. The MC then usually invites any who wish to dance in honor of our veterans to join in the dance behind the veterans as they make a second circuit around the arena. The veterans then line up on the east side of the arena at the entrance and all who pass through have a chance to greet the veterans and tell them of their appreciation.

The Broom Dance

1A

The broom dance is a fun and active dance participated in by anyone who wishes to dance. It starts out with one odd man in the circle with all of the couples. The man holding the broom is the “ugly man”. Of course, the ugly man doesn’t want to remain the ugly man and keep his current dancing partner, so he must steal one of the other men’s dancing partners. In order to do this, he must “tag” another man with the broom, who will be dancing behind and guarded by his female dancing partner.

At the conclusion of the dance, the man left holding the broom is asked to come to the center of the circle and dance with his newfound dancing partner. He is then rushed by all of the other men who participated in the dance as they attempt to take his broom. If he loses the broom to the other men, he will remain the ugly man forever.
